Background of the Study
Social entrepreneurship, a business model focused on addressing societal challenges through innovative and sustainable solutions, has gained prominence as a tool for poverty alleviation. Unlike traditional businesses, social enterprises prioritize social impact over profit maximization, aiming to improve living standards and create opportunities for marginalized communities (Adewale & Musa, 2024).
In Nasarawa State, community businesses that adopt social entrepreneurship models contribute significantly to poverty alleviation by providing employment, skill development, and affordable services. Despite these contributions, the understanding of social entrepreneurship's role in reducing poverty remains limited, particularly in rural areas where economic opportunities are scarce (Okonkwo & Hassan, 2023).
This study aims to explore the impact of social entrepreneurship on poverty alleviation in Nasarawa State, focusing on how community businesses address economic challenges and empower local populations.
Statement of the Problem
Poverty remains a critical issue in Nasarawa State, with many communities struggling to access basic necessities and economic opportunities. While social entrepreneurship holds potential as a solution, many community businesses face challenges such as inadequate funding, limited resources, and lack of awareness about effective practices (Bello & Yakubu, 2025).
Despite the increasing presence of community businesses, there is a lack of empirical data on how their social entrepreneurship initiatives directly impact poverty levels. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the role of social entrepreneurship in poverty alleviation.
